Stroke

Stroke

Stroke is a disease that affects roughly 795,000 new or previously affected people in the U.S. annually. It is the number 5 cause of disability in this country.

What are the symptoms of a stroke?

As brain tissues fail to get a regular supply of blood and oxygen it can lead to its damage. Tissues of the brain immediately begin to wither off and die as a result. Symptoms of a stroke can be easily identified in the body parts controlled by the damaged areas of the brain.

Early treatment is always recommended in such cases. Hence, understanding the sign and symptoms of a stroke is essential. Following are the symptoms.

  • Paralysis
  • Numbness or weakness
  • Confusion
  • Trouble speaking
  • Slurring speech
  • Vision problems
  • Trouble walking
  • Loss of balance and coordination
  • A severe and sudden headache with no particular cause

What causes a stroke?

Doctors have begun to understand the factors that lead to a stroke by studying its types. To classify, strokes are of three types: Transient Ischemic Attack (TIAp, Ischemic Stroke, and Hemorrhagic Stroke.

Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)

TIA is the result of a temporary blockage in the artery that leads its way to the brain. The blockage is typically in the form of blood clot that may last from a few minutes to about an hour or so. As blood begins to flow, the blockage eventually gets removed and blood flow is restored.

Ischemic Stroke

Ischemic stroke is also caused due blocks in the arteries to the brain. Deposition of a fatty substance can cause the blood clot that'd block the flow of blood to the brain resulting in an ischemic stroke.

Hemorrhagic Stroke

A hemorrhagic stroke is caused due to a burst or leaking blood vessel. Blood would seep around other tissues of the brain that'd lead to a pressure difference and cell damage. A hemorrhagic stroke could be caused due to a weakened or bulging section of a blood vessel or due to an abnormal connection between your veins and arteries.

Diagnosis of Stroke

Stroke can be diagnosed by understanding whether the patient has issues in the below areas:

  • Balance and coordination
  • Weakness or numbness in arms, face, or legs
  • Signs of confusion
  • Vision-related problems

The doctor would also undergo various tests such as

  • Tests to identify blood sugar level
  • MRI and CT scan
  • Electrocardiogram
  • Cerebral Angiogram
  • Carotid Ultrasound
  • Echocardiogram

Treatment for Stroke

Recovering from a stroke would involve a proper medical evaluation and immediate treatment.

Treatment would also solely depend on the type of strokes.

Treatment for Ischemic Stroke and TIA

  • Antiplatelet and anticoagulants
  • Clot-breaking drugs
  • Mechanical Thrombectomy
  • Stents
  • Surgery

Treatment for Hemorrhagic Stroke

  • Medications
  • Coiling
  • Clamping
  • Surgery
